Sugarlips could be the best Oz Pop / Rock album you’ve never heard. 20 years ago Zoran Romic, Leanne Kingwell and Darren Danielson, alumni of bands Chocolate Starfish and Happy Gas Stare, formed a band, wrote some songs, signed a major record deal and recorded the self titled album, Sugarlips. It was produced by the late great Mike Shipley who was fresh from recording tracks for Green Day and The Corrs. In April 2000 Music Network described Sugarlips as: “Sexy and addictive. Perfect pop brimming with delicious, fuzzy guitar jangles, quirky keyboard stabs, delivered with bubbly finesse. In a league of its own and headed straight for the top of the international pop tree.” So, what went wrong? “Murdoch bought Festival/Mushroom literally on the eve of our album drop and the beancounters immediately slashed the Mushroom Artists roster and vetoed any new releases” Leanne Kingwell recalls. “Sugarlips just sort of fell between the Art versus Commerce cracks.” “We always thought the Album deserved better,” Darren Danielson adds. “Leanne and I started thinking about releasing it ourselves after Zoran passed away in 2012. Sort of a tribute and all that. Finally we just decided to do it.” “Yup. For Zoran Romic and Mike Shipley,” Leanne sums up. “We’ll never forget you guys.” Find it on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and all major digital platforms. Wrote and recorded a new track with John K for VCA Graduate Film, “Ruby Tuesday”, a short film written and directed by Lucy Claire. It’s a backstage drama in a frankenstein world. A horror hung on the manipulation of a young woman with blind ambition in the dark underbelly of the music industry. Lucy reached out to ask if we would write and record a song that Ruby and her friend Tuesday, could perform as their punk duo “Ruby Tuesday” to kick off the film. We were stoked to oblige.

Today, women in music are selling their souls. Thanks to Wendy Squires for seeking my thoughts and including in her opinion piece on Women in Music Videos: EXCERPT: “Leanne Kingwell agrees that the focus on the music video has taken the spotlight off the music, and women are the big losers in the shift. A talented singer/songwriter/performer, she’s feeling the pressure to conform to promote her latest album, the brilliant ‘Choking on Halos’ (check it out at leannekingwell.com), but is fighting it with all her might. “Writing it and singing does something for my soul,” she says. “Making videos does nothing for my soul. I want to focus on music. I don’t want to spend energy even think about the video. I don’t want to be seen. I want to be heard. It horrifies me that in some circumstances the video is considered just as or more important than the music.” So, what to do if you are a talented female artist who would prefer to have her music noticed without adding bouncing bums and breasts? In Leanne’s case, she self-produced her album as a means to sidestep the industry pressure and bull she encountered with albums past. And, as a woman, not a girl, she knows how easily her music could be overlooked should she not fit the nubile bustier and stockings stereotypes dominating Saturday morning music shows.” “Too many mainstream clips help reinforce a subliminal perception that only young sexy women are welcome in the music biz,” she rightfully complains. “There are stubborn indies who persevere through this. But we’ll never know how many women stopped trying to make music because the couldn’t ignore the subconscious message screaming that they should stop because they were old to crack it now.” “Engineers, scientists, lawyers and CEOs are allowed to grow older wiser, more experienced and respected,” Leanne Kingwell points out. “Music videos that pull focus on and exploit youth and sex do the opposite, especially for women. Age only improves my ability to write, record and sing better songs. But I’m constantly battling my own subconscious hang-ups on whether or not an audience will find me acceptable. “If I was a novel writer it would be like the book cover being more important than the pages between. And on top of that also having to spend considerable energy and acquire the skills to conceive and illustrate a front cover. But all a novel writer really should have to do is write an amazing novel.” If only it was that simple. After all, music is made for the ears, not the eyes. But as long as the music clip lives, I fear the song will remain the same and sex will sell singles and taut tail will tag along with talent. At least for women, that is.” FULL ARTICLE HERE: http://www.debriefdaily.com/news-and-opinion/women-in-music/

An outstanding line up of musical and comedic talent are coming together and volunteering their time to assist St Kilda Gatehouse provide a safer community for vulnerable women. The Gatehouse Unlocked event starts at 7pm on the 13th of November at Encore St Kilda Sea Baths, Melbourne, Australia. The event is the brainchild of two Melbourne journalists, Wendy Squires and Jane Gilmore, who are both active supporters of St Kilda Gatehouse. They clearly have some friends because between them they have been able to pull together; Wendy Harmer, Fiona O’Loughlin, Van Badham, Lawrence Mooney, Bev Killick, Mick Molloy, Greg Fleet, Adam Zwar, Rhys Muldoon, Claire Hooper, Deborah Conway, Willy Zygier and Leanne Kingwell who will become one line up for Gatehouse Unlocked. The importance of St Kilda Gatehouse’s work was highlighted last year after the tragic death of Tracy Connelly, who was murdered in Greeves Street in her van, parked opposite the Gatehouse Drop-In service. Drop-In has been operating for 20 years, giving the women who do street sex work a safe space, to relax, to share or to just exist in peace. A feeling that they matter, that they count for something. For women who have been taught to trust no-one, Gatehouse is a place where they learn to trust again. Fundraising is essential in keeping the Centre open to provide safety and support for vulnerable women. St Kilda Gatehouse CEO Sally Tonkin states; “I’m so overwhelmed with the talent that has come together for Gatehouse Unlocked, it demonstrates to us how many community members care for the wellbeing of those involved in street sex work”. She also said: “Our work can be very serious and dark, but amongst it there is always space for humour. It is a survival tool! We’re looking forward to an event where we gain exposure to a wider audience of support and enjoy a good laugh”. The night is promising laughs, a St Kilda beach sunset, music, light refreshments and the opportunity to purchase items via a live and silent auction. Radio show “Just Another Menace Sunday”, shines a light on Feral Cat Care in the Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in the San Francisco Bay Area. You know you’re sharing the planet with some good humans, when an esteemed icon of radio, with an impressive career spanning four or so decades, including: a noteable debut at 13, as “New York’s Youngest D.J.” with his own “Top 25” show on the first U.S. cable radio station, frequent interviews with worlds biggest rock stars for likes of the “Rolling Stone Continuous History of Rock and Roll” and his own syndicated radio shows, plus a busy role as Founder / Creative Director of DTM Radio Networks and PopCult Radio… … that guy… when he offers to deviate from an established broadcast format and recording protocols, in the name of Helping Homeless Feral Cats in his local area, that is one seriously likeable fellow passenger on Spaceship Earth. That radio icon is Dennis The Menace, and the female behind the legend, is one gorgeous fluffy black philanthropcat, who answers to the name of “Velvet”. The plight of homeless cats is a cause is close to both hearts, having found each other in a shelter, where a patient Velvet had waited 8 long months for her human soul mates to walk through the door. But it was well worth the wait when Dennis and daughter Kate, swept her off her paws and into their home for a life of love and luxury. Her history prior to shelter life remains unknown however, and likely includes some difficult time on the streets. Not the kind of cats to take the past, nor subsequent good fortune for granted, Dennis and Velvet, kindly offered their airtime to help save feral friends. For the first time ever, deviating from the preferred intimacy and sound quality of an in person interview, for an Aussie to USA Skype call to chat about my “Sunshine” IndieGoGo Fundraiser set up to help the Feral Cat Foundation care for homeless cats in their area. In another historic first, Dennis completely rearranged his “Just Another Menace Sunday” syndication setup, to create a “hybrid” version, broadcasting our interview specially to local stations, with a regular version of the show beaming to other Countries and U.S. States. To hear our chat and find out how you can help Feral Cats, TUNE IN to….. KEGR RADIO 97.7, Concord CA. www.kegr.org at 10pm PDT, Friday October 10th, and; BFF.fm- Best Frequencies Forever in San Francisco http://bff.fm/ at 8am PDT, Sunday October 12th. Following our chat, I was awarded the honour of programming music for the remainder of the hour. Yippee ki-yay, motherfuckers! Don’t touch that dial, ’cause we’ll be serving up an incredible musical sandwich. Which happens to double as a public dissection of my deepest psyche, DNA code and possible alien celluar structure. Quite frankly I was blown away when told I was to be entrusted, without limitation, to drive the airwaves belonging to this respected, rare breed of DJ, who’s highly anticipated playlists are built the way they should be, (but so often aren’t these days) on pure heart and the discerning, solid gut instinct of a native New Yorker. I spent a delightful and invigorating afternoon trawling my record collection to find 14 tracks for you. On completion, I felt as though I’d spent the day visiting the most valuable, life changing friends I’ll ever know. I’m not going to tell you which 14 songs I selected. I want you to tune in and take the ride. But back to the cats for a minute… Having adopted a feral born kitten, self-appointed “Feral Cat Ambassador” TIGER KINGWELL, I am fully qualified to enthusiastically recommend these special, sensitive, beautiful…

Dizzy on Houndstooth rotation. Much excitement at Kingwell HQ, since tastemaker station Houndstooth Radio added Leanne Kingwell to regular rotation last week. The station’s creator, curator, owner and DJ, Kurt St. Thomas has certifiably platinum ears. St. Thomas gave Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” its world premiere by playing the album from start to finish over the WFNX FM airwaves, at 7pm on August 29, 1991, in Boston, MA. The album “Nevermind” went on to sell over 10 million copies in the US and 26 million copies worldwide. Kurt has DJ-ed and programmed some of the hottest airwaves in the US, including the world famous KROQ in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently the Executive Music Producer for the legendary WFNX, and launched Houndstooth Radio, to showcase his personal picks for current and next new cool. He’s chosen “SLINGSHOT” from the “Choking On Halos” album, to be played on repeat alongside alternative heroes like the Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Daft Punk, Jack White, Moby, Lana Del Rey, Gorillaz, Sleigh Bells and more… how fucking cool it is to be a peer in such company. Kurt may be “broadcasting to the world from one man’s garage”, but it’s one heck of a facility, with one heck of a playlist, and one heck of a renowned musical seer and prophet at the helm. The Houndstooth Radio playlist is cooler than outer space and live tweeted from @HTRPlaylist. Word is out on Leanne Kingwell’s “Choking On Halos” album… and the word is good. “Choking On Halos” is officially “Highly Recommended” by powerpopaholic.com. They’ve happily declared Kingwell “the anti-diva”, “defiant”, “smokey”, “cool” and “Sinead O’Connor meets Romeo Void with a Pixies fetish”. Read the full powerpopaholic review here: http://www.powerpopaholic.com/2014/09/cherry-drops.html Kaj Roth of Palace Of Rock also gave “Choking On Halos” a hearty thumbs up, describing the album as “fun”, “unexpected” and “Garbage meets Alanis Morissette with a touch of The Sounds”. Read the full Palace of Rock review here: http://rothnroll.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/leanne-kingwell-choking-on-halos.html The Musebox declares “Kingwell is clearly brewing a storm in the United States… looking to make a statement, and she definitely is!” WEBSITE: https://leannekingwell.com/ iTUNES: http://itunes.apple.com/album/id898805049 AMAZON: http://tinyurl.com/nlhb3yu
Making “Sunshine”. College radio station KACV took the leap last week, adding “SUNSHINE” to regular rotation, proving worthy of their catch phrase “Amarillo College’s cutting edge”. Only four songs were added to regular rotation and the other three names on the list were Gerard Way (singer, My Chemical Romance), Broken Bells (Danger Mouse and James Mercer’s band) and the band James, whose excellent track “Laid” was one of the best songs of the nineties. Leanne admits to being a little bit excited about the band James, liking and favoriting her posts and tweets on the radio company she’s keeping. “SUNSHINE” is enjoying repeat plays from early supporters, including 101.1FM Riff 2 Detroit, also adding a few new stations to the growing list, such as KGNU in Boulder, Colorado. Houndstooth Radio, took “SLINGSHOT” for a spin, prompting us to google and happily discover an incredibly cool playlist and radio station. Created and curated by Kurt St. Thomas, I’m told it isn’t easy to catch his ear. Recommended listening. You’ll find Houndstooth Radio here: www.houndstoothradio.com It’s great to know there’s still decision makers in the music business, willing to take a chance and back their hunches based purely on merit of the music. We’re all just pieces of God, choking on halos… In the name of rebellion and an allergy to annoying, expensive, unrealistically glamourous music videos, Leanne Kingwell made a short film called “Other People’s Shoes” to accompany a peace wish embedded in the title track of her “Choking On Halos” album. The feet you’ll see belong to real people with whom we share the planet. Each pair is a soul with a story, coming from “that was then”, on their way to “whatever’s next”. They could be you. They could be me. They could be someone you care about. Peace can only come when we acknowledge we are all one. So let’s join together, promote peace and personalize these feet. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkyTByyuFVE&w=560&h=315] Not another music video… I made a short film called “Other People’s Shoes” in response to music video requests for the title track of my album, “Choking On Halos”. Shot in Melbourne and St Kilda, (Australia) over 4 days and just about as many in the edit. I’m pleased to present you with a short film about the song, rather than a music video about me. Heating up the US airwaves with “Sunshine”. Cutting edge College station KACV have given “SUNSHINE” the thumbs up from Amarillo, Texas. Brian L Frank, KACV Program Director says: “Fabulously hooky – grabs you from the opening line and won’t let go! So you dance, nod your head or whatever turns you on to it, and then it’s over. My advice is to play it again and again and again…!” And San Francisco Radio Icon Dennis “The Menace” of DTM Radio Networks/PopCult, says: “If you are looking for another pop diva, then you can skip Leanne Kingwell. If you are looking for powerful, anthemic female Aussie accented rock with hooks, layered but not over distorted vocals that most definitely don’t fade into the background and when heard live, sure to get festival crowds fist-pumping… Dig her out of the stack in the near future.” “SUNSHINE” is enjoying recent and repeat plays in a growing number of states including: 101.1FM RIFF 2 (Detroit, MI), KACV FM90 (Amarillo, TX), Indie 103.1 (Los Angeles, CA), WSUM (Madison WI), WKZQ 96.1 (Myrtle Beach, SC), New Rock 104.7 (Fresno, CA), DTM Radio Network (syndicated in 5 US states & internationally), IND.FM & KX 93.5 (Laguna Beach, CA), KEBF (Morro Bay, CA)… and more. All this support helped us climb a couple of ranks on the KKBB Specialty Charts: KKBB Specialty Album/Artist Chart Rank: #14 KKBB Specialty Singles Chart Rank: #12 THANK YOU Dead Air Dave – Dead Air Dave Time, Dennis The Menace – Just another Menace Sunday, Tim Pyles – FTP, Naughty Dog – The Indie Show, Jade Springart – Undercover Sound System, Mase – The Flight Test and Bruce Rave – Go Deep for your support. Kicked off well at US Radio this week with airplay across several states… plus two “bonus” countries. “THIS HIGH” hitched a ride in the ethers with Dennis The Menace on “Just Another Menace Sunday”. Syndicated on the DTM Radio Network across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Gothenburg, Sweden, New Zealand and more… this adds two “bonus” countries to our radio reach. “SUNSHINE” enjoyed spins in Los Angeles from the FTP Show on IND.FM, also on KX93.5, Laguna Beach and KEBF 97.3, Morro Bay, CA. Thanks for your support Early Adopters… Great Leaders create more Great Leaders! Special round of applause to Dennis The Menace, for jumping in first. True to form stated on Menace Attic Website : “if DTM thinks it’s great songwriting, and melody, adding up to the kind of music that makes him say “Omigod!”, he plays it – usually days after he gets it! Which means that the audience tends to hear a lot of “firsts” and they like it that way!” Omigod! Thanks for the thumbs up, DTM. IN OTHER NEWS… Carrie Fisher and William Shatner replied to my Tweet (see pic). The moment was surreal and magical. I’m no Sci-Fi expert, but believe it safe to say, a personal tweet from Princess Leia and Captain Kirk is a Sci-Fi Jackpot of sorts. According to the myth, after Pandora opened the box, she closed it again, leaving only hope inside. According to fact, Leanne Kingwell’s entire “Choking On Halos” album has been added to Pandora Radio. In April 2013 Pandora Radio announced that their radio streaming service had passed 200 million users. At the time of writing, Wikipedia states that Pandora has “about a 70% share of the internet radio market in the U.S.” You probably already know what a revolutionary, internationally renowned music discovery platform Pandora Radio has created. But you may not be aware of how difficult it is for an independent artist to get their music accepted by and added to this internet giant. Naturally, they have some serious gate keeping and quality control in place to maintain their position as the biggest and best internet radio service in the world. Pandora’s own website states: “while we feel a great affection and respect for everyone who makes the choice to create, the reality is that the majority of the music or comedy we receive does not get selected.” Having the whole “Choking On Halos” album accepted into Pandora’s “Music Genome Project” is a huge win and an exciting endorsement for an independent Australian artist who’s dedicated her life to, and spent just about every penny she’s ever earned, on making music. The Music Genome Project is described on Pandora’s website as being “the most sophisticated taxonomy of musical information ever collected” which “represents over ten years of analysis by our trained team of musicologists”. Unlike less choosy competitor Spotify, (who accept all music regardless of quality), Pandora Radio “does not use machine-listening or other forms of automated data extraction… each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 450 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst.” By manually assigning “genes” to every piece of music on file, Pandora Radio applies both science and heart, to calculate compatible music to play alongside the songs or artists a listener nominates as “station seeds”. Thanks for unleashing my DNA on the world, Pandora. And for leaving me filled with hope.
